Letter to the editor: A show of community support

Supporting our neighbors supports our community.

On Saturday, Aug. 11, Dana Firkus and I were making me an all-too-common pile of great thrift stuff at his and Kim's Castoffs store. A couple came up to me and said, "What a great store." They were visiting from Sioux Falls and had decided to take the north entrance to Patriot Avenue when they saw Castoffs' sign on the side of the road.

They asked me what other stores like this were in Pequot. I responded by explaining there was an antique store south of town, but they shouldn't miss the stores and restaurants by turning right or left at the light as you drive south on Patriot. I mentioned a few names of shops and restaurants and wished them a good vacation.

Walking away, I remembered Treasures-N-Tiques, Lynn Smith's shop in Jenkins, and walked back inside Castoffs, found the couple and told them about it. They had already been there, but the gentleman shook my hand and said, "Thank you for your kindness and for promoting your town and community."

I recalled this encounter when I read Mayor Adams' letter to the editor in the Aug. 16 Pineandlakes Echo Journal, where she conveyed an encounter with a visitor who was directed to Nisswa when they inquired about "neat, interesting shops."

I worried that if that nice Sioux Falls couple, to whom I had recommended our sister town of Jenkins as a shopping destination, shared that how it might sound.

I'm proud to promote our town at every opportunity. I'd like to say we have everything here, but because we don't, occasionally we'll need to promote our neighbors - I believe we are all part of the same community.
