Legislature could telecommute to conferences

Email

Years ago I served on grand jury duty and the court system used a teleconference system to provide testimony from state troopers and witnesses from all over the state.

You could view a person’s testimony from Nome while serving on jury duty in Kenai, and no it was not necessary to provide air travel, taxi cabs, hotels, food and lodging, then transportation back to their homes. All of the testimony could be completed within a few minutes and at very little cost.

So my question is, if this teleconferencing system is good enough for the Alaska Court System then why is it not good enough for our legislators in Juneau ?

Personally I believe that it is not necessary at all to provide air travel, taxi cabs, hotels, food and lodging and days and days of these expenses for our legislators to attend conferences in Washington, D.C. in the middle of the session. Usually these conferences accomplish absolutely nothing and cost a fortune. The same thing could be provided by teleconferencing right here in Alaska.

I don’t know of anyone that actually enjoys hours and days of airports, air travel, cabs, hotels, packed into crowded conference rooms with poor ventilation and even worse seating and can’t wait until the next break from very boring speakers. Not my idea of fun.

Think of the time and money saved by using the teleconferencing system.
