John Gustav "Gus" Larson

John Gustav "Gus" Larson, age 56, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2018 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer only five weeks prior. He was surrounded by the love of his family and friends at his passing.

Gus was born in Fergus Falls, MN on May 29th, 1961 to Wayne L. and Yvonne A. (Norquist) Larson. He graduated from Brainerd High School in 1979 where he received first place at the State speech competition. He attended the University of Minnesota and earned a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1984. Gus and Katie meet in 1985 while both working at Motorola in Austin, TX and were married in Phoenix, AZ on March 28, 1987. Gus continued his education in law school and in 1994 he received his Juris Doctorate from The Texas A&M School of Law (originally the DFW School of Law). Gus was a patent attorney and partner with Larson Newman, LLP in Austin.

Gus was a people person and as such was deeply devoted to his family and friends. Katie was the center of his world as were his four children, Matthew, Anna, Eric and Ryan. Gus decided when his children were quite young that they were all going to be swimmers. For almost 20 years, every summer, Saturday morning found him at a pool watching his children compete for the Balcones Country Club Sharks. Gus was deeply involved with the team over the years volunteering as the president of the board and head judge. Swimming became an integral part of their family life with the three boys going on to swim for the Westwood High School and their daughter Anna serving as a swim coach during her college years. Gus and Katie made lifelong friends of many of the parents they met through swimming.

Gus's happy place was his "ranch" in Lexington, TX, in the house that he moved to the property and had restored. Gus had many interests and hobbies aside from the swimming community such as brewing beer, raising bees for honey, growing berries in Lexington, Thursday night poker with his buddies, and visiting with his "adopted family" in Lexington.

Gus is survived by his wife Katie, children Matthew, Anna, Eric, and Ryan Larson, his father Wayne L. Larson of Brainerd, MN; brothers W. Andrew (Joy) Larson of Deerwood, MN, and Joseph T. (Lori) Larson of Waconia, MN; nephews and niece Andrew (Lauren Wicke) Larson, Abigail (Mike) Chambers, and Sam Larson.

He was preceded in death by his mother Yvonne A. (Norquist) Larson.

A memorial service will be held at Love Lutheran Church at 9508 Great Hills Trail, Austin, on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 3pm. A second memorial/celebration of life will be held at the ranch in Lexington Sunday, May 20, 2018 at 3pm. A third memorial/celebration of life will be held in Minnesota at the Larson cabin on Round Lake Saturday, May 26, 2018 at 12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Lustgarten Foundation whose mission is to advance the scientific and medical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of pancreatic cancer.
