First canine influenza case confirmed in Brainerd area

Frederick "Fred" Charles Nelson, 75, died July 12, 2017, at a hospice center in Milwaukee, WI after a courageous battle with cancer.

Fred was born April 7, 1942, in Ashland, WI to Lydia and Carl "Cully" Nelson. He attended Brainerd Schools and graduated from Washington High School in 1960. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an air policeman stationed in Korea and Plattsburg, NY. He graduated from Northern Colorado College in Greeley, CO with a bachelor of science degree in business education and from Mankato State University with a master's degree in business ed.

He married Connie Rusch Aug. 19, 1967. They celebrated 50 wonderful years of marriage this summer. He taught and coached at Mayer Lutheran High School until he and Connie moved their family to Milwaukee, WI. He continued with his teaching and coaching career at Concordia College and Martin Lutheran High School in Milwaukee until his retirement in 2004.

Fred loved all sports, music and travel. On their 45th wedding anniversary they traveled to Delaware because it was the only state he had not been to. They also enjoyed trips to Alaska and Hawaii, Australia and Europe.

Fred was caring, gentle and kind and loved his family and friends. He so enjoyed spending time with his eight grandchildren and was looking forward to the birth of his ninth grandchild in August.

Fred is survived by his wife, Connie; children, Chris (Lynne) Nelson, Mindy Weissenborn and Angie (Andy) Bootz; grandchildren, Lydia, Josie, Jackie and Reid Nelson, Brennan and DeLaney Weissenborn, Paxton, Hugo (and new baby boy in August) Bootz; sister, Karla (Lee) Nelson, Brainerd; nephew, Mike (Angie) Nelson and great-nephews, James and Ryan, Brainerd; niece Marci (Andy) Segner, and their twins, Jimmy and Julia, Annandale; sister-in-law, Leah Rice, and her children and their families, Mark, Becky and Mary. Fred is also survived by many cousins and friends. He will be sadly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Hugo and Bea Rusch; brother-in-law, Allen Rice; and niece, Julie Nelson.

Visitation and funeral services will be at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Wauwatosa, WI on July 21-22.
