• What is FIRST LEGO league? 3-4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, starting Jan. 3. Pre-registration required. Fee: $45.
Guided by adult coaches, FIRST LEGO League teams research a real-world problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc., and are challenged to develop a solution. They also must design, build and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology, then compete on a table-top playing field.
Participants learn to apply science, technology, engineering and math concepts (STEM), plus a big dose of imagination, to solve a problem. Along their discovery journey, they develop critical thinking and team-building skills, basic STEM applications, and presentation skills as they must present their solutions with a dash of creativity to judges. They also practice the program's signature core values.
• Destination ImagiNation: Teams must pre-register by Jan. 8. Fee: $150 per team.
Parent volunteers and team leaders are needed. Anyone interested in forming a team may follow the process found on the Community Education website at com-ed.prbschools.org. To register a team, call 218-587-2080.
Parents need to be proactive in forming teams for students. A team consists of a team manager (adult) along with three to eight students. Team managers are usually parents of team members. A team can have more than one team manager. Support is provided. A team cannot participate without an adult who is willing to manage the team.
All team managers will need to complete a background check. For more information, visit the Website: mndi.org/
