Tiger Talk: New look to Pine River-Backus High School

The 2017-18 school year is here. The high school is starting out with a new look and upgraded security.

Work began in May 2017 with design by Kodet Architectural Group and construction by HyTec Construction of Brainerd. The high school office was completely remodeled with a new addition.

We have new security systems in place allowing certain access for students, staff and community to enter the high school. The ceilings have been replaced in the halls with resurfaced sprinkler heads.

All of the hallways have a fresh coat of paint. The outside canopy was demolished and replaced with a new entrance and canopy with better lighting for security and ease of access.

The heating system has been upgraded to the building automation system, which allows maintenance staff to control the system, save energy and, in turn, save on energy costs.

The lighting system was entirely replaced with LED lighting. The computerized system allows the lights to turn off and on when needed. This is used when the halls are empty or for security night lighting.

We've also replaced the vinyl tile in the halls with Marmoleum. This is a 100 percent biodegradable base made with 97 percent natural raw material, the majority being renewable in 10 years. The Marmoleum promotes better indoor air quality and inhibits the growth of bacteria. There is no sealing, waxing or stripping of the floors and cleaning requires only plain, soapy water or our non-pH chemical. There is a 30-year warranty on this product as well.

The district replaced all 580 lockers with an all-welded corridor locker. Per building code, 5 percent of the lockers are equipped with ADA accessibility options for students or staff. These lockers are quieter and easier to use with the new combination style.

The grounds have been given a face-lift as well with the replacement of nearly all asphalt and new LED light poles for security at the high school and early childhood parking lots.
