Mother of two children who died in southeastern Minnesota crash had died in crash 2 years ago
RED WING, Minn. -- A two-vehicle accident north of Red Wing resulted in the death of three people, including two children, on Saturday morning, July 14.
The two children's mother had died in a vehicle crash just two years ago.
In Saturday's crash, Robert Welch, 50, Hager City, Wis., crossed over the centerline on County Road 18, according to a news release from the Goodhue County Sheriff Office on Monday, July 16.
Lynn Rapp, 68, Buffalo Gap, S.D., was driving southbound and attempted to avoid Welch but was not able and hit his vehicle.
Stacy Lande, 47, Hager City, Zachary R. Johnson, 8, Red Wing, and Taylor S. Johnson, 5, Red Wing, were traveling in the vehicle driven by Welch and were pronounced dead at the scene. The Johnson brothers were wearing seat belts.
Welch had serious injuries and was flown from Mayo One to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester with Rapp being transported to Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing with minor injuries.
Rapp was wearing a restraint devices, but it is unknown if Welch and Lande were.
In March 2016, Taylor and Zachary’s mother was killed in an automobile crash.
Marya Christiansen, 23, was killed when her van was found submerged in the backwaters of the Mississippi River near Hager City.
Christiansen was reported missing a few days earlier after she didn’t return home after a night out at a Red Wing bar with friends.
