Pequot Lakes woman suffers serious injury in jump from bridge
A 19-year-old Pequot Lakes woman was seriously injured after she jumped from the Washington Street Bridge into the Mississippi River this past weekend.
The Brainerd Police Department was dispatched at about 9:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, to respond to the area of the Washington Street Bridge over the Mississippi River to investigate a report that a person just went over the bridge railing and jumped from the bridge.
Arriving officers learned from witnesses a despondent woman went onto the bridge, crossed over the railing and jumped from the bridge into the river below, the police department reported.
Officers descended the river bank and could hear the woman in the river calling for help. Paramedics from North Memorial Ambulance and Brainerd officers located the woman downstream near the Laurel Street Bridge. She was assisted to shore there. Due to the injuries she suffered and the nature of the river bank at that location, the Brainerd Fire Department utilized their inflatable boat to transport her to the Kiwanis Park area to transfer her to an ambulance.
The woman was transported to an area hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries. Monday, police had no information on her current condition.
The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department also assisted at the scene.
Police continue to investigate this matter and anyone with information regarding this is asked to call the Brainerd Police Department at 218-829-2805.
