Lake Friendly Award winners to be honored at ceremony

Brainerd Lakes area environmental organizations are collaborating to publicly recognize homeowners, contractors and local units of government that have developed or redeveloped their lakeshore or riverfront properties in a lake friendly way and followed current state and local ordinances.

Winners will be honored at a ceremony from 3-4:30 p.m. Friday, June 1, at the Northland Arboretum in Baxter, where they will receive a custom framed nature print or framed certificate, courtesy of Nisswa artists Jerry Raedeke and John Bonde.

The winners from Crow Wing and Cass counties for homeowner or contractor who use native vegetation and natural materials to landscape their riparian property are: Backyard Reflections; city of Lake Shore Environmental Committee; Claire Steen, Upper Hay Lake Association; Rose, Hank's Lake; and Agate Lake Association.

The winners from an organization or a local unit of government that has created an ordinance or other initiative that enhances area lake and river systems are: BAELN - Brainerd Area Environmental Learning Network, Cows for Clean Water, and University of Minnesota Extension Central Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships.

Ceremony attendees will receive free appetizers and the opportunity to network with winners, and the winners of the Crow Wing County Soil and Water Conservation District Photo Contest are also invited to attend, as their photos will be on display.
