• Solar 101: 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, Pine River-Backus High School Media Center. Fee: free.
This event will teach the basics of solar energy, including how it works, whom it works best for, costs and benefits. Visitors can get answers to questions about radiant and renewable power of the sun. There will be demonstrations to teach about community and residential solar and how it works in Minnesota.
Instructor is Erica Bjelland of the Rural Renewable Energy Alliance.
"Solar energy is a cost effective and appropriate technology that can dramatically augment the performance of residential and commercial building," Bjelland writes. "However, as a site-specific technology, there are significant design-build considerations, particularly in cold climates to ensure proper form and function. This session will cover the suite of appropriate solar technologies and their deployment for long-term energy and economic benefit. We will also discuss assessing sites and the process of identifying the most appropriate technology. Solar energy is a cost effective and appropriate technology that can dramatically augment the performance of residential and commercial building. Finally, we will cover current utility and state incentives, economics, and other costs and benefits of various solar energy applications."

Change a plastic bottle into a dragonfly, butterfly, ladybug or yet-to-be-discovered insect. Instructor is Mary Jo Litke.
• Hospice Education "Knowledge Reduces Fear": 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, Pine River-Backus High School Media Center. Fee: free.
Join Good Samaritan Society Hospice for a conversation about end-of-life concerns you may have, either for yourself or someone you love.
There will be question-and-answer time with discussion about what hospice is, who qualifies and what is covered, who makes up the hospice team, benefits of hospice care, how hospice cares for mind, body and spirit, what services The Good Samaritan Society provides, questions about the dying process and grief support after the loss of a loved one.
• Applesauce and More: 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, Pine River-Backus Elementary School Room 34. Fee: $5.
Make applesauce for a snack and paint with apples. Instructor will be Mary Jo Litke.
• Bedazzling Beads: 3-5:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, Pine River-Backus High School Room 255. Fee: $5.
Join others once a month to make jewelry, snakes, lizards, key chains and magnets from different beads.
