Area firefighters battle blazes
Area fire departments were called into action last weekend.
A detached garage on County State Aid Highway 1 was fully engulfed in flames when the Ideal Fire Department responded about 9:15 p.m. Saturday, May 14, near the intersection of Long Farm Road and CSAH 1, northwest of Upper Whitefish Lake.
Ideal Fire Chief Ryan Schultz said mutual aid from the Pequot Lakes, Crosslake and Pine River fire departments was requested to fight the fire, and water was drawn from the Pine River at the nearby County State Aid Highway 15 bridge.
Schultz said the cause of the fire was undetermined as of Sunday, May 15.
The Mission Fire Department was called at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 15, to a residence on the 14000 block of Pine Cone Lane, just north of Horseshoe Lake, for a small grass fire. The Crosslake Fire Department was called for mutual aid as the fire threatened to burn a garage, although the call was canceled after Mission firefighters gained control of the blaze.
Mission Fire Chief Randy Roach said 11 firefighters responded and knocked down the fire in an hour. The cause of the fire was burning by the resident that got out of control when a gust of wind came up, Roach said. A little more than an acre burned.
