Detroit Lakes police release victim's name in mysterious death investigation

DETROIT LAKES – Police here have released the name of the 32-year-old man whose February death due to a heroin overdose spurred an investigation into the two men who might have been the last to see him alive.

Christopher Michael Richot was new to Detroit Lakes, but had family in Grand Forks and had spent time in Fargo, officials said. He was found Feb. 10, and the autopsy report showed he died of a heroin overdose.

Earlier this week, Detroit Lakes police asked for the public's help in identifying two men who were captured on video with Richot at his apartment complex on Feb. 7, when officers estimate he might have died.

One came forward, and police said Wednesday that they had learned who the second man was.

They're questioning the men as a result of the autopsy, because there was nothing in Richot's apartment to indicate drug use. At first, Richot appeared to have died of natural causes.

"Drug overdoses are pretty instant," Detroit Lakes Police Investigator Robert Strand said, "so that leaves us with some questions."
