Email News Alerts

A Soldotna resident accidentally shot his dog Friday after thinking someone was breaking into his home, officials reported.

Jesse Evans, 56, called Alaska State Troopers to report his home was in the process of being robbed, initially claiming two rounds were fired through his front door and that he had returned fire, also shooting through his front door.

However, Troopers found Evans, the only occupant of the residence, under the influence of alcohol and prescription medications. Evans admitted to accidentally shooting his dog, Nuka, as a result of the incident. The dog was taken to a local veterinarian where it underwent surgery for the single gunshot wound. Troopers report the dog is likely to survive the incident and is currently doing well.

Troopers are still investigating the incident. Trooper spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said Evans had not been arrested or charged with any crime as of Saturday.
