Kenai Spur Highway collision closes road
The Kenai Spur Highway reopened at Mile 7.5 just after 6 p.m. Sunday after being closed for about an hour due to a snowstorm-related series of collisions.
Kenai Police Sgt. Kelly George said the highway was closed because of vehicles and debris on the road, the result of an accident that involved four cars. Names of those involved in the accident have not been released.
The pileup started when a 40-year-old woman driving a 1995 Maroon Ford Tarus driving toward Soldotna passed another vehicle, fishtailed and lost control. She hit a 2008 Dodge Durango head-on.
The 40-year-old and her 14-year-old passenger were transported to Central Peninsula Hospital with significant injuries.
The Durango was driven by a 54-year-old female who was transported to CPH with minor injuries.
A 1988 Volvo Wagon, driven by a 17-year-old female, collided with one of the other vehicles. That driver was transported to CPH to be checked for pain.
A fourth vehicle was also part of the pileup. A 1995 Ford Bronco driven by a 22-year-old male went into the ditch to avoid hitting the first three cars. The driver was uninjured.
George said there were two other accidents, one on Bridge Access and another on the Kenai Spur, while the first one was being handled Sunday afternoon.
