Racers complete Sweetheart Canoe Derby

Devin Arenz, St. Paul, took home the Pro C-I Solo Championship after completing the 12-plus-mile route through Birch Lake into Ten Mile Lake and back during the Sweetheart Canoe Derby on Saturday, June 21, in Hackensack. He finished with a time of 1:50:16.

Al Rudquist, Grand Rapids, placed second with a time of 1:50:46, followed by Brett Arenz, Falcon Heights, in 1:53:10.

On Saturday, June 21, the pro women tandem team of Maren Hagen and Krista Matison, both of Grand Rapids, finished the course in 1:56:52.

Also on June 21, the citizens solo race, a much shorter distance than that for the pros, resulted in Ed Arenz, Isanti, winning with a time of 44:45, followed closely by David Harrington, Bemidji, in 44:47. The remaining racer was Anthony McKeown, Nevis, with a time of 1:13:52.

Sunday, June 22, races were all tandem races and again the professional racers took the 12-mile-plus route up to Ten Mile Lake from the Hackensack City Pier and returned. It was a close race with the winner being Devin Arenz and Dustin Olson of Duluth, winning with a time of 1:46:32, followed by Brett Arenz and Todd Johnson of Lino Lakes, with a time of 1:46:33.

The citizens tandem race, on the shorter route within Birch Lake, was won by Peter Funnell and Ed Arenz, both of Isanti, with a time of 42:45, followed by Margarete Rinde, Park Rapids, and Anthony McKeown, Nevis, in 59:24. Third place went to John Arenz and Wanda Arenz, both of Cass Lake, with a time of 1:09:7.

The Sweetheart Tandem race was won by Al Rudquist and Krista Matison, both of Grand Rapids, with a time of 1:47.
