Maci Martini of Eagle View Elementary School and Emma Templeton of Pine River-Backus School were among winners of the Brainerd Elks’ 41st annual Elks Hoop Shoot held Saturday, Dec.14, at Forestview Middle School in Baxter for youth ages 8-13.

Martini placed first in the girls’ ages 8-9 category. Templeton won the girls’ ages 12-13 category.

Carly Chaney of Eagle View finished third in the girls’ ages 10-11 category, and Ashley Foster of Pequot Lakes Middle School was third in the girls’ ages 12-13 category.

Schools from approximately a 30-mile radius of Brainerd held their own in-school free-throw contest and the winners from these schools were sent on to Baxter to compete in the local Elks Hoop Shoot. There were 47 entries from the area who competed in the contest and a total of more than 3,000 youth in this area who participated in their schools to reach this point.

In addition to the participants, 11 players from the Brainerd High School girls’ and boys’ basketball did the rebounding for the participants and formed a tunnel on the floor to give these kids high fives and congratulate them.

The first-place winners in each division now go on to compete at the Elks Central District Hoop Shoot on Jan. 25 at Lake Region Christian School in Baxter. The six winners from there will go on to state, regional and national competition, where the final champions names will be inscribed on the Elks Hoop Shoot plaque at the Basketball Hall of Fame.
