The board is seeking advice in dealing with zebra mussels and other invasive aquatic species that have been discovered in the Gull Lake chain in recent years. They wish to learn what can be done to control species that are presently invading the system and how to avoid introducing additional inappropriate plant and animal species.

McComas is an expert in the latest methods for dealing with aquatic invasive species. He holds M.S. degrees in civil engineering from the University of Minnesota and aquatic ecology from Texas University. For several years he designed water treatment plans for a Chicago consulting engineering firm. Then, in 1985, he founded his firm, Bluewater Science, in St. Paul.

Over the last 25 years, he has advised lake associations, city governments and other relevant agencies on lake and pond management issues. For instance, several years ago, Brainerd area residents were mystified when, during frigid winter months, they observed open water in the middle of North Long Lake. It was McComas, the Lake Detective, who solved the mystery: the phenomenon was caused by unusually high subterranean water levels remaining from the previous summer’s heavy rains.

Garage Logic radio listeners are familiar with ‘The Lake Detective.’ He is frequently called upon to address mysterious issues involving lake and river waters. Each year McComas is a headliner guest on Garage Logic’s State Fair broadcasts.

The Lake Association’s annual gala includes a membership meeting followed by a silent auction, a delicious dinner and a keynote speaker presentation.

Tickets are available at the GCOLA website at www.GCOLA.org.
