St. Paul man wins Sweetheart Canoe Derby state championship

Devin Arenz, St. Paul, won the C-1 State Championship in the Sweetheart Canoe Derby on Saturday, June 15, in Hackensack.

Arenz finished the race, which runs through Birch Lake, up the Little Boy River to Ten Mile Lake and back to Birch Lake and around — a 10-mile trip — in 1:48.36.

Coming in second was Joe Manns, Maplewood, with a time of 1:50.46. Al Rudquist, Grand Rapids, claimed third with a time of 1:52.34.

Winners of the women’s pro tandem race, which is the same course as the C-1 State Championship, were Anne Manns of Maplewood and Io Harberts of St. Paul, who finished with a time of 2:01.15. Second place went to Maren Hagan and Krista Matison, both of Grand Rapids, with a time of 2:01.59.

On day two of the derby Sunday, June 16, winners of the pro tandem race were: Joe and Anne Manns of Maplewood, 1:54.12, first; Krista Madison and Al Rudquist, both of Grand Rapids, 1:55.23, second; Eric Manns, Maplewood, and Fred Kuffer, Falcon Heights, 1:56.4, third.

The citizen’s tandem race winners were Landon Godwin and Chris Godwin of Nevis in 50:22, followed by Mark Morrissey and Monica Hansmeyer, Turtle River, in 52:24. Third place went to Wanda Arenz and John Arenz, Cass Lake, in 1:05.39.

For the first time during the Sweetheart Canoe Derby, there was also a citizen’s kayak race, won by Ashley McCormick in 1:21.13, followed by Paula McCormick in 1:22.17. Both are from Foley.
