WAPOA sponsoring annual Shoreland Contest

Once again this year, the public is invited to mingle and have fun while learning more about how they can help the lakes through shoreline improvement projects. There are lots of different challenges facing lakeshore owners, as properties vary with the terrain.

The opportunity to take a further step and apply for funding for a project is available for those who wish to be a part of the Whitefish Area Property Owners Association’s (WAPOA) fifth annual Shoreland Contest. WAPOA will distribute up to $6,000 to winners.

Even if you are not ready to start a project and are simply curious about rain gardens and solving runoff or erosion problems, this is a casual chance to see hands-on materials and photos of finished projects, ask questions and visit with others.

Shoreline Restoration Social Night will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, at Moonlite Bay in Crosslake with an open house format. The Social Night is open to anyone interested in the topic, whether or not they are a WAPOA member.

It is hoped that those interested in pursuing a project on their own property will then meet from 5-7:30 p.m. June 19 at Ideal Town Hall to look closely at their challenges and figure out actual goals for their shoreland with people “in the know.”

The 2013 Shoreland Restoration Contest is open to the public, whether or not they are a WAPOA member, as long as they own property on either the Whitefish Chain or one of the outreach lakes where WAPOA does water quality testing. These include Ox, North and South Roosevelt, Smokey Hollow, Lawrence, Leavitt, Mitchell, Eagle, Kego, West and East Fox, Butterfield, Ruth, Mary, Emily, Goodrich, O’Brien, Velvet, Kimball, Ossawinnamakee, Star, Clear and Upper Hay lakes.
