CO Duke Broughten (Longville) spent the week focusing on angling, spring fish run, and ATV activity. Many small lakes in the area are starting to open but large lakes are still ice covered. Spring fishing opener brought few anglers to the Longville area, however the anglers that found areas to fish had success. Due to the late spring many sportsmen raised concern of targeting walleyes during the spawn. CO Broughten also assisted Cass County Sheriff’s Office with removal of a disorderly subject from a residence.
CO Nikki Shoutz (Pine River) saw spotty success for walleyes caught on the Fishing Opener with mostly shore fishermen as many lakes were still ice locked. Crappie anglers in a boat found open water to reach a bay to fish and had trouble getting back after an ice heave floated over to the opening to the bay blocking them in. Some limits of crappies were seen and good compliance for the most part. Many grass fires were responded to as the dry conditions persist before green-up. Enforcement action was taken for burning during burning ban and burning prohibited materials. A complaint was also taken for operating ATVs in closed area.
CO Tim Collette (Pequot Lakes) saw a quiet opening weekend with many anglers deciding to wait for softer water and better weather. Some anglers who braved the weather did get some nice walleyes and crappies. Commercial bait dealers were checked and state forests still under seasonal closures were monitored. Several complaints of illegal sucker spearing at night were taken as the fish are still running in area creeks.
CO Mike Lee (Crosslake) checked anglers this past week who were reporting an actually good bite due to the weather and ice conditions. Officer Lee assisted other Law Enforcement agencies with a structure fire and a welfare check on an individual at a residence. The party was taken into custody and transported to jail. Officer Lee also received complaints of trespassing by shore fishermen. Anglers are reminded to know the road of right of way limitations. Enforcement actions were taken for failing to pull boat plug, Illegal Length walleyes and unattended lines.
