Tigers end regular season 7-12
The Pine River-Backus Tigers baseball team suffered three losses in two days last week to end their regular season with a 7-12 record.
The Tigers lost two games to the Pequot Lakes Patriots 3-2 and 5-2 on Tuesday, May 20, and then dropped a makeup game to the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves 11-2 on Wednesday, May 21.
PR-B was seeded ninth and was scheduled to play at No. 8 Menahga in the first round of the Section 6A playoffs on Tuesday, May 27. The winner advanced to play top-seeded New York Mills.
Tigers 2, W-H-A 11
The Tigers scored their runs in the first and third innings, but the Wolves had already taken a 6-1 lead after the first and the PR-B was unable to make a comeback.
Pitcher Zach Struss had a rocky start walking six, giving up three hits, and allowing six runs in the bottom of the first inning, but he ended with one strikeout, 10 walks, seven hits and only one earned run after the first.
The Tigers had 10 errors and only four hits. Nick Gravdahl doubled and Spencer Richards was 2-3. Timmy Bardeau knocked in both runs for the Tigers.
PL sweeps Tigers
The Tigers had the same number of hits and errors as the Patriots in the second game, but the Tigers only had singles while the Patriots had a double and a triple that led to two runs in the sixth.
Struss went 3-3 with two RBI. Austin Smith took the loss pitching five innings, striking out three and giving up five hits.
In the opener, the Tigers had four errors, two of which resulted in runs. PR-B scored its runs in the first and second innings and the Patriots scored one run in the first, fifth, and seventh innings. Joe Davidson took the loss pitching six innings, striking out four and giving up six hits. Gravdahl went 2-3.
