Pine River-Backus’ Henry Krecklau had a dominating individual meet with four event wins, but it was the Pequot Lakes Patriots who stole the show by sweeping the boys’ and girls’ titles at the Subsection 23, Section 6A meet on Thursday, May 22, in Pequot Lakes.

A total of 37 Pequot Lakes athletes and five alternates advance while PR-B is sending a total of seven individuals and the boys’ 4x200 relay to the Section 6A meet at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, at Moorhead State University. The top five individuals and top two relays advanced.

The Pequot Lakes girls, who won its third straight subsection title, finished with 157 points while Long Prairie-Grey Eagle was second with 116. Vanessa Lane again sparked the Patriots with wins in the 100 and 200 dashes and joined Rachel Allen, Sarah Rudlang and Chloe Bermel on the Patriots’ first-place 4x100 relay. Also winning for Pequot Lakes was the 4x400 relay of Grace McGuire, Rudlang, Lyndsey Johnson and Bermel, and Ellie Erholtz in the shot put.

“A subsection championship on our new track was momentous and a memory maker,” said Patriot girls’ coach Jana Lueck. “We consistently dominated the events, and are sending athletes to compete at sections in 14 of the 18 events.

“After all of our frigid meets we have suffered through this spring, the nice (subsection) weather was an absolute gift. It was a welcome variable for a successful night.”

The Patriots won the boys’ title with 145 points while LP/GE was second with 108 and PR-B third with 107. Travis Jacobson won the shot put and long jump for Pequot Lakes while Tyler Tappe won the pole vault with a school record leap of 15 feet, 7 inches.

“We came into this meet knowing that the team to beat would be Long Prairie/Grey Eagle,” said Patriot boys’ coach Dave Guenther. “Our coaches needed to play a ‘chess game’ where we placed our runners and field athletes to score optimum points. It was the fourth, fifth and sixth places that we need to pick up that helped us win the championship.”

Guenther added that his squad had some “great performances” in the throwing events with Travis (Jacobson) and Keegan (Johnson). He also praised Tappe’s record vault in his final home meet and noted that Cole Funik and C.J. Borleis “helped us out” in the long jump.

“It was also a nice surprise with eighth grader Reid Pierzinski in the triple and the hurdles,” Guenther said of Pierzinski, who was third in the 300 hurdles and triple jump and fourth in the 110 hurdles . “The kids had a good night and I’m very proud of their accomplishments. It was nice to see the weather cooperate for our kids here on their home track, where our seniors capped off a great year at home.”

Krecklau came through with wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes along with long jump. He also joined Shane Sepin, Jacob Harper and Tyler Bestgen on the winning 4x200 relay. Sepin won the 400 dash and triple jump for the Tigers while PR-B’s Megan Porta won the discus.

“Henry (Krecklau) and Shane (Sepin), who had personal bests in the 400 and triple jump, have put up some good times all year,” said Tigers’ coach Tom Demars, “but as the season has gone on, the competitor has really come out in each of them. Not only in the meets, but also in practice.

“In both the 100 and 200 dashes, Henry beat kids that had beaten him previously this year. I’m excited to see how they does at section against even stronger competition.”
