Patriots win 3rd straight conference title

The Pequot Lakes softball team sweep Staples-Motley in a Mid-State Conference doubleheader by scores of 8-0 and 4-1 on Friday, May 16, to win its third straight conference title.

Both teams entered the day unbeaten in conference but the Patriots earned the sweep as pitcher Katie White tossed a pair of three-hitters.

White struck out eight, walked two and allowed three hits in the first game. The senior then struck out seven, walked three and allowed three hits and one earned run in the nightcap.

Pequot has gone 33-1 against conference opponents over the past three seasons. The only loss came last season at Park Rapids.

Pequot Lakes finishes the regular season 14-5 overall, and was scheduled to host Pine City in the Subsection 7AA playoffs on Tuesday, May 20.

In the first game, Pequot Lakes scored five runs in the third inning, sparked by a two-run double by Erin Rudbeck. The other three runs came in the fourth as Miller doubled and White and Taylor Crocker had singles. White struck out eight for the win.

Crocker went 3-4 with a run, two RBI and a double, Erin Rudbeck was 2-3 with a double and two RBIs and Kayla Miller finished 2-4 with two RBI, two runs and a double. White and Barbara Miller both went 2-4.

“Katie (White) pitched a nice game for us, and we really hit the ball well,” said Patriots coach Bret Sergent, whose team outhit S-M 13-3.

In the second game, Miller added two more doubles and Laura Squires went 2-3 with a run for Pequot Lakes, which enjoyed a 7-3 edge in hits. The Patriots scored once in the second and fourth innings, and added two runs in the third. S-M scored in the sixth.

S-M was without senior pitcher Megan Vetsch because of injury. The Pequot Lakes junior varsity team defeated S-M 10-3 as Taya Salminen was the winning pitcher.

Patriots sweep Perham

On Thursday, May 15, White picked up two wins by fanning 13 batters in 14 total innings while tagging a game-winning solo home run in the first game as Pequot Lakes swept the Yellowjackets by scores of 8-7 and 4-3 in a Mid-State doubleheader.

In the opener, Pequot Lakes assumed a 4-0 lead after two innings and led 7-5 after four innings before Perham tied it in the sixth. White then belted a solo homer, her seventh of the season, in the bottom of the sixth. The Patriots turned a double play in the seventh to preserve the win.

Kayla Miller went 3-4 with for the Patriots in the first game while Barb Miller added three hits and three runs, and White had two hits. White struck out six to earn the win.

In the second game, Pequot Lakes jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by White, but the Yellowjackets tied it in the fourth. The Patriots then scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning without the benefit of a hit. White had eight strikeouts for the pitching win. Pequot Lakes did enjoy a 6-4 edge in hits.
