Tigers stay perfect in conference
In between rain showers the Pine River-Backus Tigers softball team managed to get in an Upper Mississippi Conference double-header against the Nevis Tigers, and PR-B came out with a pair of wins to raise its conference record to 6-0.
The first game was close as PR-B came back from three runs down to take the lead with five runs in the bottom of the third inning.
While keeping Nevis from getting farther than second base in the next two innings, PR-B lengthened its lead to 7-3 by adding two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Nevis managed two runs in the top of the sixth, but PR-B answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to win the game 9-5.
Journee Howard went 2-3 with two doubles. Steph DeGrote had a double and three RBIs. Megan Felthous went 1-3 with a triple. Annie Semmler went 2-4 with one RBI.
Miah Hansen was the winning pitcher as she struck out nine, walked six and gave up seven hits. PR-B had no errors to Nevis’ three errors.
Tigers top Nevis 26-5
The second game was not close at all as PR-B batted all the way through its lineup in the top of the first inning to make the score 9-0 right from the start.
Nevis scored four runs in the bottom of the first and managed one run in the bottom of the second, but PR-B added 10 more runs in the top of the second, four in the third, and three in the fifth to easily take the win 26-5.
Semmler took the win, pitching five innings, striking out five, walking three and giving up five hits.
PR-B had seven hits, including a triple by Felthous, who went 2-3 with three RBIs. Howard was 1-1 with a double, and DeGrote went 2-4 with one RBI.
PR-B improves to 8-2 overall.
The Tigers are scheduled to play on Thursday, May 8, at Red Lake, followed by a double-header Friday, May 9, against the Menahga Braves and the Northome-Kelliher Mustangs.
