BHV rallies past Tigers 12-5

The Pine River-Backus Tigers softball team led 5-3 going into the bottom of the fifth inning against the Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale Raiders on Friday, April 25, when the Raiders took over with five hits, including a grand slam and two key errors by the Tigers, for a 12-5 victory.

The Raiders scored their last run in the bottom of the sixth, and the Tigers managed one run in the top of the seventh but it wasn’t enough as they took the loss 6-13. The Tigers had five hits to the Raiders 11. Olivia Davidson went 2-4 with an RBI for the Tigers and Steph DeGrote went 1-2 with two RBI. Miah Hansen took the loss, striking out three, walking seven, giving up 11 hits, and allowing seven earned runs.

The Tigers shredded the Laporte Wildcats in a conference double-header Tuesday to remain undefeated in the Upper Mississippi Conference.

In the first game the Tigers scored at least one run in every inning while holding the Wildcats to one run in the third and one in the fifth to take the win 24-2. Megan Felthous was 1-2 with a triple and three RBI and Annie Semmler was 1-2 with a double and two RBI. Hansen went 3-3 with four RBIs and took the win as pitcher with 10 strikeouts, four walks, and two hits.

In the second game, the Tigers batted through their lineup twice in the first inning to make the score 13-1 right away. The Wildcats scored one run in the first inning, one in the second, one in the third, and one in the fourth. The Tigers added two more runs in the second and two in the fourth to easily win 17-4. Liz Downie went 1-3 with an in-the-park home run, Journee Howard was 3-3 with three RBI, DeGrote went 2-3 with two RBI, Semmler went 2-2 with a double and one RBI, Carlee Staples went 1-1 with three RBI, and Taina Williams tripled. The Tigers had 13 hits to Laporte’s four. Semmler was the winning pitcher as she struck out three, walked five, and gave up four hits.

The Tigers are now 6-2 overall and 4-0 in their conference. They are scheduled to host Walker-Hackensack-Akeley in a doubleheader on Tuesday, May 6.
