The Pequot Lakes girls’ basketball senior captains Vanessa Lane, Katie White and Kayla Miller were chosen most valuable players this season for the Patriots at a team banquet on Sunday, April 6.

The trio were All-Mid-State Conference selections who helped the Patriots compile a 23-7 record while advancing to the Class AA state quarterfinals and finishing as Mid-State co-champions. Miller finishes her career with 1,470 points while Lane had 1,350 and White 870.

Other awards were Haley Wiebolt, Coaches Award and most assists; Kelsey Hart, Patriot Award; Lane, best defensive player and rebound leader; Caitie Ryan and Emilee Buell, most improved; Miller, best three-point shooting; White, best free-throw shooting: and Buell, most two-point shooting.

Lane was also the Mid-State Conference MVP while Wiebolt, Ryan, Hart and Buell received all-conference honorable mention. Wiebolt, White, Lane, Miller and Ryan were Echo Journal newspaper athletes of the week, Lane was a Brainerd Dispatch player of the week while White, Lane and Miller were first-team picks for the Dispatch all-area team, and Lane was the Dispatch Player of the Year.

Miller was a Miss Basketball state candidate and was academic all-state. Lane was an all-state selection, and will play in the coaches association all-star series on Saturday, April 26, at Carleton College in Northfield.

The Patriots also received academic team gold with a 3.75 grade-point average. Pequot Lakes defeated East Grand Forks for the subsection title and downed Hawley for the section title.

“Some people might think we’re done because we lose three very good players to graduation, but we have more talent coming up,” Coach Jon Dale said. “Our junior varsity team was 21-3 this year while our seventh- and eighth-grade teams only lost one game. Our C team was also 11-4 overall.”
