Patriots, Tigers on all-area team

Pequot Lakes’ sophomore forward C.J. Borleis and Pine River-Backus sophomore forward Zach Struss were chosen to the annual Brainerd Dispatch All-Area Boys’ Basketball team.

Three players from Crosby-Ironton made the all-area team as the Rangers finished with an area-best 24-4 record and advanced to the North Subsection 8AA finals.

Seniors dominated the list with eight of the 12 spots going to upperclassmen. Coaches nominate players and the team is selected by The Dispatch sports staff.

Borleis was an All-Mid-State Conference player who finished with 319 points (11.8 per game), 224 rebounds (224), 46 assists (1.7) and 54 steals (2.0). He shot 46 percent from the field, 61 percent from the line, 35 percent from 3-point distance.

Struss was an All-Northland Conference player who finished with 401 points (14.9 points per game) and 244 rebounds (9.0). He shot 62 percent from the field, 73 percent from the line.

Receiving honorable mention on the all-area team were Hunter Larson and Jack Kreitz of Pequot Lakes and Konrad Bueckers of PR-B.

Larson, a sophomore guard, compiled 273 points (10.1 per game), 22 rebounds (0.8) and 38 assists (1.4). He shot 41 percent from the field, 59 percent from the line, 39 percent from 3-point.

Kreitz, a junior forward, had 227 points (8.4 per game), 127 rebounds (4.7), 59 assists (2.2) and 38 steals. He shot 42 percent from the field, 67 percent from the line, 29 percent from 3-point.

Buckers, a sophomore guard, earned All-Northland Conference honorable mention after finishing with 285 points (10.6 per game), 170 rebounds (6.3), 180 assists (6.7) and shot 73 percent from the line.
