It was the seventh straight win and 12th victory in 13 games for the Patriots, who advanced to play Hawley in the section championship on Friday, March 14.

Kayla Miller finished with 21 points, Vanessa Lane had 20 points and 12 rebounds and Katie White had five points and eight rebounds. Haley Wiebolt finished with nine points while Lane also had six steals, five blocks and three assists.

“The Patriots assumed early 9-2 after a layup by Wiebolt. They extended the lead to 23-7 with 10:15 left in the first half following a 9-0 run. Pequot Lakes eventually led 41-14 with just under four minutes remaining in the opening half after 3-point baskets by Wiebolt and Miller. During the run, Lane repeatedly stole the ball and scored on put backs.

Pequot Lakes led 44-22 at the half as Lane had 14 points and Miller added 12 in the opening session. The Patriots then scored the first nine points of the second half behind a pair of layups by Lane and a three-point play by Emilee Buell to make it 53-22.

Pequot Lakes enjoyed its biggest lead of the game at 62-30 with 10 minutes remaining after a 12-foot basket by Miller. EGF then rattled off 11 straight points to cut the deficit to 62-41 before a pair of baskets by Miller stopped the run.

“Our players really stepped it up tonight, especially our seniors who are pretty determined to get back to their third state tournament,” said Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale. “This was our best defensive effort all year. We really contained their top scorers (Kelsey Schlenk and Alex Arroyo). Our whole team scouted (EGF) when they played really well in beating Crosby-Ironton on Saturday. We then had a good practice on Monday and we were ready tonight.”

Schlenk led the Green Wave with 11 points while Arroyo finished with eight, all coming in the first half.

The Green Wave, who also lost to the Patriots 61-55 in season opener on Dec. 7 at EGF, finish with a 15-14 record.
