Patriots top Sebeka in final regular season game
The Pequot Lakes girls’ basketball team won its final three regular season games to finish 19-6 overall heading into the top-seeded Patriots’ home North Subsection 8AA playoff game against No. 9 Badger/Greenbush/Middle River at 7 p.m. on Thursday March 6.
Pequot Lakes ended the regular season with a 74-38 win over the Sebeka Trojans in non-conference action on Friday, Feb. 28.
Seniors Vanessa Lane, Katie White and Kayla Miller along with team managers Ashley Abear and Justyne Litzau were honored before the game on Senior Night.
The Patriots broke open a close game early by assuming a 43-27 halftime edge. The Patriots substituted freely all night as many players saw extended action, including Kelsey Hart, who had a personal-best 14 points.
Also finishing in double figures for the hosts were Lane with 21 and Miller with 17 while Heidi Olson had 14 to lead Sebeka.

On Thursday, Feb. 27, Pequot Lakes gained a share of the Mid-State Conference title with a victory over Park Rapids. The Patriots share the honor with Detroit Lakes and Staples-Motley as all three teams were 8-2 in conference games.
The Patriots led 42-35 at the half against a much-improved Panthers, but the visitors pulled away in the second half. Lane poured in a game-high 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while teammate Haley Wiebolt scored a career-high 20 points, and added four 3-point baskets and had seven assists.
Also reaching double figures for Pequot Lakes were Katie White with 12 and Emilee Buell with 10. Charity Ridlon led the Panthers with 20 points.

On Tuesday, Feb. 25, the Gobblers led the entire first half before Pequot Lakes rebounded with a strong second half for the non-conference win.
The second-half comeback was ignited by Katie White’s 3-point basket at the start of the second half. The Patriots eventually grabbed the lead when White stole the ball, passed to Wiebolt, who passed to Lane for the layup to give Pequot Lakes a 47-45 lead with 13:25 left. Lane and Miller were both called for their fourth fouls.
“All the girls stepped up their play (with Lane and Miller in foul trouble), including freshman Corrina Ruud, who got some rebounds and a basket,” said Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale.
The game was tied at 61-61 before Pequot Lakes finished it with a 12-4 run. White had 18 points while Lane and Miller each added 16 points and Haley Wiebolt had 10 points and nine assists.
Bailey Nordean had 15 points for the Gobblers, who drop to 17-7 overall.
