Park Rapid eliminates Patriots
The Pequot Lakes boys’ basketball season came to a crashing halt as the visiting fifth-seeded Patriots lost to No. 4 Park Rapids 62-53 in North Subsection 8AA quarterfinal on Thursday, Feb. 27.
“Again, we made too many turnovers on unforced errors and we let (Park Rapids) have far too many rebounds on the offensive boards,” Pequot Lakes coach Ben Starns said of their Mid-State Conference rivals.
The Panthers quickly built at 9-2 lead and eventually led 29-19 at the half despite three 3-point baskets by Hunter Larson. The Patriots kept the game close early in the second half, and they trailed 31-28 after C.J. Borleis’ basket with 14:40 left.
Park Rapids later led 45-35 before Pequot Lakes rallied behind 3-pointers by Jack Kreitz and a layup by Borleis started a comeback. Larson and Brett Peterson hit 3-point shots with 4:05 remaining, and Larson connected on another 3-point shot to cut the deficit to 51-50.
In the final minutes, the Patriots turned the ball over on two straight possessions, and the Panthers turned them into points. Park Rapids scored the majority of the final points at the free-throw line as they sent Pequot Lakes home with a loss.
“We made a nice comeback to make it a two-point game,” Starns said, “but then we had a couple of turnovers that hurt.”
The Patriots end the regular season 10-17 overall. Larson scored a team-high 18 points, with six 3-point baskets, and Borleis followed with 14 points. Rolee Johnson led the Panthers with 18 points.
