PL teams compete in basketball
The Pequot Lakes junior varsity boys’ basketball team beat Crosby-Ironton 63-60 in overtime on Friday, Feb. 14.
The Patriots trailed 9-2 early and then 28-18 at the half as Trey Jacobs made three 3-pointers for C-I. The Rangers scored the first points of the second half, but the Patriots went on a 19-1 run for a 37-31 behind 3-pointers by Gage Westlund and Connor Dale. The remainder of regulation time was played even as Brandon Hehir and Eric Elverum had several baskets for Pequot Lakes and Westlund’s free throw sent the game into overtime tied 59-59.
The Patriots then had a rebound basket by Hehir in overtime while Jacobs responded with a free throw. The Rangers had possession and were going for the winning shot when Elverum stole the ball to score at the buzzer.
Hehir and Westlund each had 14 points, Elverum 11, Dale eighth, Josh Buell seven while Jacobs had 16 and teammate Evan Edmundson 15 for the Rangers. Against C-I, the Patriots’ seventh-grade boys’ team won 51-10 while the eighth-graders built a 46-5 lead and won 61-14.
Patriot girls’ JV wins
The Pequot Lakes junior varsity girls’ basketball team defeated Grand Rapids 55-47 in overtime on Thursday, Feb. 13. The Patriots led 10-3 early before the Thunderhawks went on a 13-0 run. The rest of the first half was close, and Pequot Lakes led 29-28 at the half on baskets by Caitlyn Carkhuff and Sam Littman.
The second half remained close, although the Patriots led 44-37 after a 3-pointer by Carkhuff and a layup by Littman. However, Grand Rapids tied it 44-44 then the visitors missed three late shots and the game went to overtime. The Patriots enjoyed an 11-3 edge in overtime with Littman scoring six points for the win.
Littman led Pequot Lakes with 19 points, Morgan Lohmilller had 10, Carina Ruud nine, Barb Miller six, Carkhuff five, Jessica Faacks four and Laura Squires two.

Ten Pequot Lakes players scored, led by Faacks with 12, Littman 10, Squires eight, Carkhuff six, Morgan Lohmiller five, Corina Ruud and Barb Miller four each, and Molly Dotty, Chloe Bermel and Lyndsey Johnson with two.
The Patriots defeated Staples-Motley 51-49 after trailing 19-18 at the half. Ruud led Pequot Lakes with 20 points while Faacks added 13 and Littman six.
The Pequot Lakes C-team was defeated by Grand Rapids 73-31. Lindsey Johnson had nine points, Molly Dotty and Elsa Headlee each had eight, and Chloe Bermel had six.

The Pequot Lakes seventh-grade defeated C-I 54-28 with a balanced scoring attack on Tuesday, Feb. 11. Britta Sandelin had a team-high 14 points, Eloise Engholm added nine, Olivia Lane and Mackenzie Nelson eight each, and Emma Nevin and Britt Kratochvil each with seven.
The Pequot Lakes eighth-grade won 30-22 with Sarah Lohmiller hitting a 3-pointer for the Patriots late in the game. Karli Skog had a team-high 11 points, Bre Sewall added eight, and Kristin Skog and Maggie Miska each had four. Pequot Lakes has just one loss this season.
