Lightning eliminated by LF

Ninth-seeded Northern Lakes’ hockey season ended with a 5-2 loss at No. 8 Little Falls in the Section 6A first round on Saturday, Feb. 15. The Flyers snapped a 1-1 deadlock with three straight goals in the second period and advanced to the semifinals against St. Cloud Cathedral on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

The Flyers scored early as Mark Anez made it 1-0 at 2:35 of the first period. Nick Reed tied it with an unassisted goal in the final minute of the opening period.

Little Falls regained the lead just 19 seconds into the second period when Thomas Miller tallied, and then the Flyers extended the lead to 4-1 later in the session when Landon Bjorge tallied twice in the span of 1:50.

Northern Lakes reduced the deficit to 4-2 when Reed netted his second goal, assisted by Nick Olson, at 11:35 of the third period. But Little Falls regained a three-goal lead 1:33 later when Anez scored his second goal.

Winning goaltender Ezra Spandl stopped 14 shots while losing netminder Mitch Stangel stopped 26 shots.

The Lightning finished 9-17 overall while the Flyers improved to 4-20 overall. Little Falls had defeated Northern Lakes 5-3 during the regular season.

Northern Lakes were shut out in their final regular season game against the Prairie Centre (Long Prairie-Sauk Centre) North Stars in a Mid-State Conference game on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Long Prairie.

Stangel had 44 saves for the Lightning, who finished 2-6 in conference games.
