Detroit Lakes is unbeaten in the conference while the Patriots are second with a 6-1 record and S-M third at 5-2. Pequot Lakes also defeated the Cardinals 68-66 on Jan. 25.

Both matchups against the Cardinals were close. On Feb. 6, Pequot Lakes escaped with a win on Vanessa Lane’s free throw in the final seconds.

“We turned the ball over way too many times in the first half,” said Patriots coach Jon Dale. “And to make matters worse, Katie White picked up her third foul with over eight minutes left, and sat out the rest of the first half.”

S-M scored seven straight points for an early 13-6 lead. The Cardinals later led 17-13, but the visitors rallied for a 22-21 lead with 4:10 left in the half as Kelsey Hart came off the bench with a 3-point basket, Kayla Miller added a layup and Hart hit a nice jump shot. S-M later scored the final four points of the first half to tie it 31-31 at intermission.

Pequot Lakes assumed a 44-39 lead when White scored her first points with 14:45 remaining. The Cardinals eventually grabbed a 51-47 lead on two free throws from Jaelin Beachy, but the Patriots tied it on baskets by Lane and Haley Wiebolt. S-M took a 59-56 lead with 3:20 left before White’s 3-pointer tied it again.

The contest was again tied at 63-63 with 2:05 left on a layup by Miller. The Cardinals has possession as the clock ticked down in the final minute. The Patriots grabbed a loose ball with 20 seconds left, and then Lane was fouled with 6.7 seconds on the clock. Lane made the second free throw, and S-M moved in for a shot, but Miller blocked the attempt for the victory.

“Katie (White) was in foul trouble, and struggling with her shooting, but she turned a 3-point play and hit a big 3-point shot,” Dale said. “Kayla (Miller) and Vanessa (Lane) shot well all night, and Kelsey (Hart), Haley (Wiebolt), Emilee (Buell) and Caitie (Ryan) all stepped up for us. It was a big win against a ranked team.”

Miller poured in 18 points and Lane totaled 15 for the Patriots. Grace Wolhowe finished with 14 points, Mackenzie Holst collected 13 and Kelsy Zetah 10 for the Cardinals, who dropped to 12-5 overall.

The Patriots, 13-5 overall, was scheduled to play Crosby-Ironton on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
