Lightning top W-DC 6-3

Nick Blanchette had a hat trick to lead the Northern Lakes Lightning boys’ hockey team past Wadena-Deer Creek 6-3 in a Mid-State Conference game on Monday, Feb. 3, at Breezy Point Arena.

The Lightning led 2-1 after two periods before exploding with four straight goals to start the third period for a 6-1 lead. Austin Mesenbrink, Kyle Sellner and Josh Maucieri also scored for Northern Lakes. Winning netminder Mitch Stangel stopped eight shots.

Northern Lakes, 2-4 in the conference and 9-13 overall, is scheduled to play at Detroit Lakes in a Mid-State game on Thursday, Feb. 6.

On Saturday, Feb. 1, Northern Lakes was outscored by Achiever Academy in a non-conference game at the University of Minnesota’s Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis. Dante Zapata had three goals for Achiever Academy. Stangel stopped 37 shots.

The Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake Moose tallied five goals in the second period to shutout visiting Northern Lakes on Thursday, Jan. 30.

Stangel stopped 57 shots as the Moose outshot the Lightning 62-17.
