Road Crew 3rd at conference
The Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew placed third in the competitive Mid-State/Heart of Lakes Conference tournament on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25.
Champions for the Road Crew were Anthony Philipson (106 pounds), Nick Gravdahl (152), Justin Mackenthun (195) while teammates Jared Adkins (heavyweight) and Ozzy Miller (160) placed second.
“This is the first time for the combination of the two,” said head coach Travis Hoffarth. “This has been talked about for years-a tournament that would be more competitive and would have full brackets. This has to be one of the toughest conferences in the state. We are still getting better with each kid showing improvement.”
Perham won the team title with 207 points, followed by Frazee 204.5 and the Road Crew 177.
On the Jan. 24 Guillotine publication state ratings, Perham was in the Lean and Mean (honorable mention for Class AA) while the Road Crew was ranked 11th in Class AA and Frazee is rated No. 2 in Class A.
Philipson was taken down at the start of his first match. His Frazee opponent got an escape in the second period, but it was all Anthony with a 14-3 victory. He only needed 1:08 to win his second match. Philipson, rated third in the state, defeated seventh-ranked Cole Grinsteinner of C-I with a reversal in the third period for a 2-1 win.
Isaac Manthei (113) got a takedown in the first period and won 2-0. He lost his second match 8-5 then came back for a 6-2 victory. Isaac placed fourth losing in the third period to a late reversal 4-2.
Spencer Richards (120) needed a takedown in the first period and a reversal in the second to win 4-0. He was pinned in the second match, but came back and won 5-1. Spencer placed fourth losing to the Byron Beyer of Frazee 5-0.
Brandon Mager (126) lost his first match 11-6-was injured in the second match and was out for the day. Evan Gravdahl (132) was taken down and put on his back in the first period. He got out of the pinning hold and ended up pinning his opponent at 1:44.
He next lost to Kyler Votava of Barnsville. In the second period of his next match Gravdahl got four near fall points, but ended up losing 9-4.
Devyn Richards (138) lost his first and second matches. Dillon Nichols (145) was all business in the first period getting two takedowns and near-fall points before getting his pin at 1:54. In his second match he ended up in a tie, but lost in overtime. He came back to win 7-0 and in his third match won with a pin at 1:30. In his next match he lost 8-5, but came back with a pin at 54 seconds to place fifth.
Nick Gravdahl won by fall at 3:08. He was ahead 4-3 going into the third period of his second match when he took control and won 12-5. Gravdahl faced last year’s section champion Parker Jackson of Detroit Lakes, who is rate fourth in the state. In the first period Gravdahl was taken down twice, but ended the period with a reversal and three near-fall points with time running out. Gravdahl was ahead 12-7 going into the third period when he was down and escaped, but was taken down and this happened twice. Gravdahl then kicked it in and got two takedowns to win 19-12.
“This had to be the match of the day for us,” said Hoffarth. “Nick had great concentration and just heads up wrestling against a tough competitor.”
Miller started off with a bye, and then won with a pin at 1:28. In his next contest he won with a pin at 1:25. Miller lost in the championship round to Patrick Glynn of Perham.
Joe Harrison (170) has been coming on strong at the end of the season. In his first match he got the first takedown and the pin at 55 seconds. He lost his next match 15-2. His next loss was a close contest 6-5. Harrison won with a pin at 32 seconds to place fifth.
Justin Nuemann (182) won with a pin at 1:52, but lost his second match before coming back with a pin at 2:42. His next match he won 6-1, then was pinned, and placed sixth losing his last contest.
Mackenthun started off with a bye then dominated 14-1.Wrestling in the final, Justin was ahead 7-0 going into the third period was put on his back, but got a reversal and won 9-3 to win.
Cadel Roeder (220) started off getting a pin at 1:22, lost his second match, then came back with a pin at 54 seconds and lost his final match 3-0.
Adkins won his first match in overtime His second match was against James Huwe of Detroit Lakes, Adkins won with a reversal in the third period 2-1. In the final match Adkins wrestled Garrett Malstrom of Frazee. An escape in the second period gave Malstrom a 1-0 win.
The Road Crew, 14-2 overall, was cancelled in its match against Grand Rapids on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and then scheduled to face Detroit Lakes and Wadena-Deer Creek in Pequot Lakes on Friday, Jan.31.

Perham 35, Road Crew 15
The Road Crew suffered just their second dual meet loss in 16 matches on Tuesday, Jan. 21, when they were defeated at Perham 35-15.
Manthei, Nick Gravdahl, Miller and Mackenthun registered the only wins for the Road Crew against the Class 2A’s ninth-ranked Yellowjackets.
The Road Crew, who surrendered just one pin against Perham, was missing four varsity wrestlers, including two that are rated in the state.
