Lightning lose to River Lakes

The Northern Lakes Lightning boys’ hockey team was defeated by River Lakes (Cold Spring/Paynesville) 6-3 in non-conference play on Saturday, Jan. 25, in Paynesville.

Nick Reed scored for the visitors to cut the deficit to 2-1, but River Lakes answered with two more goals. Kyle Sellner scored for Northern Lakes late in the period, but the Stars answered with a goal a minute later.

Losing netminder Mitch Stangel made 31 saves while Trevor Meed stopped 26 shots.

The Lighting, 9-10 overall, were postponed against Mora on Tuesday, Jan. 28, but play at Monticello on Thursday, Jan. 30.

Josh Maucieri and Nick Olson netted goals for Northern Lakes in a loss to the Greenway of Coleraine/Nashwauk-Keewatin Raiders in a non-conference game on Thursday, Jan. 23, in Coleraine.

The Raiders led 2-0 after one before Maucieri and Olson led the Lightning comeback with goals in the second and early third period. Kole Kalisch put in the winning goal for the Raiders with less than three minutes left to play. Stangel made 26 saves as G-N-K outshot Northern Lakes 29-26.

On Tuesday, Jan. 21, Nick Olson scored the lone goal for Northern Lakes in a loss to Prairie Centre (Long Prairie/Sauk Centre) in a Mid-State Conference game.

Olson scored in the third period, assisted by Nick Reed and Nick Blanchette.
