Stone leads alpine skiing team

Alex Stone, a Pequot Lakes freshman, placed fourth to help the Brainerd Warriors finish second at Giants Ridge course on Saturday, Jan. 18, in Biwabik.

The Warriors are scheduled to ski at Andes Tower Hill (Alexandria) on Thursday, Jan. 23.

Brainerd was eight points behind Stillwater for first. The Warriors’ Hannah Moen was ninth, Grace McGuire 11th and Ashley Fitterer 14th. Payge Fitterer, who skied in place of a sick Jayden Lindner, finished 19th.

“It’s a neat opportunity to ski against teams we rarely see,” Brainerd coach Jim Ruttger said in a Brainerd Dispatch story. “Stillwater is one of the top teams in the state so to be only eight points behind them felt really good, especially on a state meet venue. The girls did an outstanding job.”

Girls team scores: 1-Stillwater 290, 2-Brainerd 282, 3-Minnehaha 275, 4-Burnsville 241, 5-Andover 212, 6-Forest Lake 205, 7-Northwest Alpine 187, 8-Apple Valley 185, 9-Cloquet 164, 10-Virginia 161, 11-Irondale 127

Individual winner: 1-Poppy Anema (Minn) 1:26.40
