Lane stars for Patriots

Last week’s two road victories were memorable for Pequot Lakes girls’ basketball player Vanessa Lane. The senior scored 31 points, including reaching the 1,000-career point milestone, in a 79-24 Mid-State Conference win over Wadena-Deer Creek on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Lane then scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 76-52 non-conference win over the Pillager Huskies on Friday, Jan. 17.

“(Pillager) didn’t have anyone who could stop (Lane) under the basket,” said Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale. “We had a good first half from everyone in building a 44-26 lead and breaking things open.”

Also against Pillager, Katie White had 13 points and Kayla Miller added 10. Paige Leifermann led Pillager with 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Patriots, 9-4 overall, were scheduled to play at Bemidji on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and then host a pair of Mid-State Conference games - Detroit Lakes at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, and Staples-Motley at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25.

On Jan. 14, Lane became the 16th player in Pequot Lakes’ program history to surpass 1,000 career points against the Wolverines.

Lane entered the game needing 24 points to reach 1,000, and surpassed that goal while helping the Patriots improve to 3-0 in the conference.

“It was nice to see Vanessa get her 1,000th career point, but we also played well as a team,” Coach Dale said.

The Patriots assumed a 10-2 lead early, but the Wolverines reduced the deficit to 14-11. Lane then helped Pequot Lakes extend its lead as she compiled 17 points for a 43-18 halftime lead. Kayla Miller had a basket to start the second half, and then the next four baskets belonged to Lane. The final basket helped her reach the 1,000 career point mark as the visitors led 53-19 with 13:00 left.

Lane ended with 31 points and Haley Wiebolt had 14.
