North Stars snap losing streak

The Breezy Point North Stars snapped their eight-game losing streak with a 5-4 comeback win over the Minnesota Flying Aces of Little Falls in a North American Tier 3 hockey game on Sunday, Jan. 12, at Breezy Point Arena.

The North Stars fell behind 2-0 after the first period, but rallied in the middle session as Russel Barone and Nick Manney had unassisted goals and Blake Neumann added a power-play goal that tied it 3-3 after two periods.

Jake Mullendore’s short-handed goal gave the Aces a 4-3 lead early in the third period, but Mitch Pierson scored, assisted by Kyle Eberwein and Blair Seitz, to tie it at 12:08. The Lightning then earned the victory when Eberwein tallied, assisted by Kyle Whipple, at 14:46.

Winning netminder Joey Bergquist stopped 31 shots while losing goaltender Mike Stumpf stopped 29 shots.

Breezy Point, 7-24-2, is scheduled to play at Alexandria on Wednesday, Jan. 15, before hosting Twin City Steel at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, and North Iowa at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19.

Steel 7, North Stars 2

On Saturday, Jan. 11, Breezy Point was outshot 47-17 against the Steel as Jace Childs had the hat trick. Twin City built a 7-0 lead before the North Stars scored twice in the third period. Joe Laskero netted an unassisted goal and Scott Schroeder scored on the power play.

Winning netminder Zach Denny had 15 saves while Bergquist stopped 40 shots.

Steel 8, North Stars 3

On Friday, Jan. 10, Russel Barone, Mitch Pierson and Crosby Steen netted goals for Breezy Point in their 8-3 loss to the Steel at Vadnais Heights.

Assisting on the goals were Blair Seitz, Schroeder, Laskero and Bo Borowski. Goaltender Troy Pierce had 31 saves for the North Stars.
