Patriots defeated by Staples-Motley

The Pequot Lakes Patriots boys’ basketball team fell to the visiting Staples-Motley Cardinals 61-52 in a Mid-State Conference matchup on Friday, Jan. 3.

The game was close early as Pequot Lakes led 10-9 after a 14-foot basket by Travis Jacobson. S-M quickly regained the lead on a basket by Nathan Schimpp, but the Patriots stayed with the visitors, and only trailed 25-24 with 2:20 left in the half after a layup by Brett Peterson. The Cardinals did close out the half with a 6-0 run to assume a 31-24 advantage.

Pequot Lakes scored the first four points of the second half to reduce the deficit, but S-M answered with 3-point baskets by Schimpp and Seth Auger to take a 41-30 lead. Three-pointers by Peterson and Hunter Larson, and a three-point play by CJ Borleis, kept the Patriots alive as they only trailed 56-52 with 1:06 left when Jack Kreitz nailed a 3-point shot. The Cardinals made five of six free throws down the stretch to clinch the nine-point win.

“We kept fighting hard, and had a chance at the end,” Pequot Lakes’ coach Ben Starns said. “Sometimes you rely too heavy on your outside shooting, and when the shots don’t fall you struggle a bit. Right now, that’s our Achilles heel. We need to find other ways to score.”

Tyler Holub finished with 16 points, and was followed by Seth Auger with 14 for the Cardinals, who improve to 2-1 in the Mid-State and 6-4 overall.

The Patriots were led by Travis Jacobson with 12 points while CJ Borleis had 11.

Pequot Lakes, 1-3 in the conference and 5-5 overall, were scheduled to play Crosby-Ironton on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and then play a non-conference game at Grand Rapids on Thursday, Jan. 9.

“We have a tough stretch of games coming up,” Starns said, “but that gives us an opportunity to grow as a team.”

Pequot Lakes JV triumphs

The Pequot Lakes junior varsity squad defeated Staples-Motley 47-32 after jumping to a 19-2 lead, and then leading 28-16 at the intermission. The Patriots were led by Gage Westlund with 15 points while Josh Buell had 10, Hunter Goerges and Austin Anderson with seven each, Eric Elverum had six and Lucas Mumm had two.

“The kids played well tonight and it helped to get off to a quick lead,” said Pequot Lakes coach Alex Kunesh.

The C-team won 45-42 after leading 29-22 at the half. Kirk Johnson led the Patriots with 17 points, Andy Voges had nine, Mike Pluimer eight, Casey Welch five, Ben Nelson four and Noah Borleis two.

“We had a big lead early, but their press gave us trouble and we almost lost,” said Pequot Lakes coach Bret Sergent.
