Pequot Lakes girls 2nd at Walker

The Pequot Lakes Patriots girls’ basketball team finished second in the Gold Division after losing to the Mountain Iron-Buhl Rangers 67-59 in the championship game of the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolfpack Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 28.

The Patriots did build a 43-30 halftime lead before being outscored 37-16 in the second half as the Rangers had big rallies at the end of the first half and the start of the second half.

On Friday, Pequot Lakes defeated the Parkers Prairie Panthers 63-41 in the opening game. The Patriots’ Katie White, who led her team with 16 points against the Panthers and 22 against the Rangers, and teammate Vanessa Lane, who combined for 27 points, made the all-tournament team.

The title game paired two ranked teams as MI-B is second in Class A and Pequot Lakes is seventh in Class AA.

The game was close early as White’s 3-point basket gave the Patriots a 16-14 lead. White later scored to give her team a 28-17 lead, and then the senior made four straight free throws to extend the lead to 35-21. White, who had 18 points in the opening half, later made a basket to extend the lead to 42-21. But the momentum was about to switch teams. The Rangers closed out the final three minutes of the half with a 9-1 run to reduce the deficit.

MI-B quickly closed the gap more to open the second half with a 10-1 run, although the Patriots continued to lead after Lane’s layup that made it 49-45. It was tied at 49, but the Rangers rallied as Chelsea Mason layup gave her team a 58-51 lead with seven minutes remaining. After that point, MI-B made seven of eight free throws in the closing minutes to seal the win.

Kayla Miller had 15 points and Lane 13 for the Patriots.

The Patriots, 5-3 overall, play a non-conference game at Perham on Thursday, Jan. 2. The Patriots’ losses this season are against ranked teams, fall twice to MI-B and once against Thief River Falls, ranked fifth in Class AAA.
