PL junior varsity basketball

The Pequot Lakes junior varsity girls’ basketball team was edged by Mountain Iron-Buhl 53-48 in overtime on Thursday, Dec. 19.

The Patriots built a 13-5 lead early, but the remainder of the game was very competitive with the score tied at 26-26 and the game tied 44-44 at the end of regulation as Corina Ruud’s short jumper sent the game into overtime. The extra period was tied at 48 on a basket by Pequot Lakes’ Laura Squires and Jessica Faacks, but the Rangers scored the final five points to win.

Both Squires and Ruud had 11 points for the Patriots while Morgan Lohmiller and Sam Littman each had seven, Faacks six, Caitlyn Carkhuff four and Barb Miller two. Eighth-grader Mary Burke led the Rangers with 17 points.

On Monday, Dec. 16, Pequot Lakes beat Deer River 49-25 behind 13 points by Faacks and eight each from Littman, Ruud and Carkhuff.

JV boys beat Pillager

The Pequot Lakes junior varsity boys’ basketball team rallied to defeat Pillager 48-39 on Friday, Dec. 20. The Patriots had trailed 25-19 at intermission. Gage Westlund led Pequot Lakes with 13 points while Lucas Mumm added eight, and Josh Buell and Austin Anderson six each.

“We got off to a good start (leading 8-0) before we trailed at the half,” said Pequot Lakes coach Alex Kunesh. “We had a good second half from Gage (Westlund) and the rest of the guys to win.”

On Dec. 19, Pequot Lakes was defeated at Pierz 47-42 as Brandon Hehir had nine points, Buell eight, Hunter Goerges and Connor Davich five, Westlund and Eric Elverum four each.

On Dec. 17, the Patriots defeated Park Rapids 45-35 after leading 19-10 at the half. Goerges had a team-high 15 points while Elverum had eight, Buell six, Connor Dale and Anderson five, and Mumm and Westlund three.

“We played better than we did at Detroit Lakes,” Kunesh said. “Hunter (Goerges) had a nice game as did Eric (Elverum) before he got into foul trouble.”

The Pequot Lakes’ C-team defeated Pierz 51-23 after leading 26-10 at intermission. Erik Sandelin had a team-high 12 points, Hunter Clement added eight, and Mike Plumier and Kirk Johnson six each.

The Patriots downed Pillager 41-32 after leading 20-13 at the half. Plumier led Pequot Lakes with nine points, Clement and Johnson each had eight, Casey Welch five, Ben Nelson four, Andy Voges three and Jack Keiffer and Sandelin two each.

On Dec. 17, the Patriots trailed Park Rapids 15-10 at the break on way to a 40-27 loss. Johnson and Voges each had six points.

“We played well and had balanced scoring (against Pierz and Pillager),” said Pequot Lakes C-team coach Bret Sergent, “but we didn’t play well, shot poorly and made a lot of turnovers against Park Rapids.”

The Pequot Lakes eighth- and seventh-grade boys’ basketball teams both dominated Park Rapids. The eighth-graders won 72-29 as 11 players scored, including Zach Sjoblad with 20 points and eight rebounds. The Patriots’ Chase Larson, Zach Struss and Nathan Trout each added eight points, Sam Scheuss had six points and six rebounds, Kade Kitzmann had six points and four rebounds, Jack White had five points, Adam Casanova had four points and four steals, and Austin Young and Griffin Nelson each had two points.

The Pequot Lakes seventh-grade team beat Park Rapids 56-23 as Jordan Schommer had 14 points, Dylin Ackerman 11, Austin Meister eight, Tyler Manley six, Aaron Washburn five and Sean Ryan four.
