Lightning girls edged by Princeton

Princeton/Becker/Big Lake skated past the Northern Lakes Lightning girls’ hockey team 6-3 in a non-conference game on Saturday, Dec. 21, in Princeton.

Erica Schramel and Maggie Peterson each had two goals against the Lightning, who drop to 5-8 overall. Maria Reed had a goal and added an assist while Sam Bittner and Mikaela Florey also scored for Northern Lakes. Losing goaltender Haley Deutsch stopped 32 shots.

“We scored first, which excited our girls, “ said Northern Lakes coach Kristen Harsha. “It became a battle once (Princeton) scored. It was a very physical game. Unfortunately, our trend of not staying out of the penalty box continues.

The Lightning trailed 2-1 after the first period, but tied it in the second session.

“Our second period is always our best, and we came out flying,” Harsha said. “Once again (Princeton) capitalized on the little things that we didn’t do. It was a battle all the way, they came out on top.”

The Lightning is scheduled to play Fort Frances, Ontario, at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 30, in the opening round of the three-day Schwann’s Cup in Blaine.

On Thursday, Dec. 19, Northern Lakes was shutout by the Bluejackets in non-conference action at Breezy Point Arena.

Three first-period goals in the opening 4:09 gave Hibbing/Chisholm all the offense it would need for the win. Amy Brownell and Erin Scovill scored 38 seconds apart, and then the Bluejackets added a power-play goal.

“It’s always an awesome experience to play at the historic Hibbing Arena,” Harsha said. “We played with Hibbing for the first half of the period, but after a couple of goals our team started to fall apart.”
