Tigers now 3-2 overall

The Pine River-Backus girls’ basketball team is off to a 3-2 start after defeating Northome-Kelliher 64-43 in a Northwoods Conference game on Friday, Dec. 13.

Megan Felthous led the Tigers with 22 points, nine rebounds and nine assists while teammate Megan Porta had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

The Tigers shot 47 percent from the field, and were 4 of 10 from the free-throw line, led 30-22 at the half.

The Tigers, 1-1 in the conference, were scheduled to play Cass Lake-Bena on Tuesday, Dec. 17, before hosting Menahga on Thursday, Dec. 19, and playing at Upsala on Friday, Dec. 20.

Felthous led all scorers with 30 points as the Tigers picked up a win against the visiting Sebeka Trojans on Thursday, Dec. 12. She also had nine assists and four steals.

Porta finished with 14 points and eight rebounds and three blocks. Liz Downie had 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Cheyenne Swenson had 10 points. Howard finished with eight rebounds while Allison Anderson had five steals.

The Tigers outshot Sebeka 31-21, and also had more rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks, and fewer turnovers.

After scoring 21 points in the first half to give the Tigers a 29-23 lead at half time, the Wolves limited Felthous to just two points in the second half as they came back to take the win on Tuesday, Dec. 10.

“We really battled back and improved our defense and offense in the second half,” said W-H-A coach Jim Lien.

Porta finished with 11 rebounds.
