Patriots explode past Deer River

The Pequot Lakes Patriots girls’ basketball team rolled up a total of 266 points in winning three straight games - pounding visiting Deer River 89-29 in a non-conference game on Monday, Dec. 16, defeating Pierz 88-70 in the home opener on Tuesday, Dec. 10, and beating Park Rapids 89-68 in a Mid-State Conference matchup on Thursday, Dec. 12.

On Monday, the Patriots exploded for a 27-0 lead in the first 11 minutes, and then enjoyed a 45-12 halftime lead, on way to a 60-point win over Deer River.

Vanessa Lane had 23 points, 15 rebounds, five steals and four assists to lead Pequot Lakes. The senior has 69 points and 47 rebounds in her past three games.

Kayla Miller and Katie White each added 12 points as the Patriots hit 66 percent of their shots from the floor. Haley Wiebolt had seven points, eight assists and four steals for Pequot Lakes, which has won fourth straight. Sam Littman came off the bench to score 10 points.

“We were an overmatch for them,” Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale said of the Warriors. “Our girls played better defense, and our bench did a great job.”

The Patriots, 4-1 overall, host Mountain Iron-Buhl on Thursday, Dec. 19.

Against the Panthers, Lane had 21 points while White added 17 and Miller 12 with six steals as Pequot Lakes won its conference opener. The game was tied 13-13 when the Patriots scored seven straight. Pequot Lakes eventually led 22-19 before going on a 14-0 run, which featured 3-point baskets by Wiebolt and White to break the game open at 36-19 with six minutes left in the opening half.

The Patriots went on to lead 52-32 at the half as Emily Buell made a 12-foot shot for the last points of the half. Pequot Lakes substituted freely in the second half with Laura Squires and Sam Littman getting baskets, and Caitlyn Carkhuff scored her first varsity points.

On Dec. 10, Lane exploded for 25 points and 16 rebounds while White added 13 and Wiebolt 11.

Miller scored the first points in the new Athletic Center, and the Patriots jumped to an 11-0 lead to set the pace for the night. The Patriots later led 17-7 after Caitie Ryan’s 16-foot basket, but the Pioneers narrowed the gap on a pair of 3-point baskets by Talyre Boser.

The Patriots extended the lead to 25-13 with 4:11 left in the opening half. Pequot Lakes eventually led 41-28 at the half.

By scoring the first six points of the second half, the Patriots led 47-28 with just under 11 minutes remaining. The hosts later led 61-37 after a 3-pointer by White and baskets by Kelsey Hart and two free throws by Lane.

The Patriots coasted from there with Laura Squires getting her first varsity points, and Littman making a basket for the final points.
