“We’re learning to play as a group,” said Lightning coach Craig Larson. “And we’re also getting some surprises in our lineup.

“Mitch (Stangl) has stepped up in goal, and Jaeger (Reed) has also done well as a freshman goalie. Our defense is playing well, and we’re getting good production from our forward lines, especially our Nick (Blanchette), Nick (Olson) and Nick (Reed) line. Josh Maucieri has also stepped up as a freshman.”

The Lightning, 6-2 overall, were scheduled to play Wadena-Deer Creek on Tuesday, Dec. 17, and then host Park Rapids at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19, at Breezy Point Arena.

Against Greenway-N-K, the Lightning assumed an early 2-0 lead when Alex Tangen and Blanchette scored five seconds apart. The Lightning iced the win with a third-period insurance goal by Nick Reed. Stangl stopped 26 shots for the win.
