Jordyn Glenz tallied 16 points for Verndale as the Pirates downed Pine River-Backus 49-43 in a non-conference game on Friday, Dec. 6.

Megan Felthous notched 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Tigers, while Elizabeth Downie added 12 points.

PR-B, 1-1 overall, faced Walker-Hackensack-Akeley on Tuesday, Dec. 10, and will host Sebeka on Thursday, Dec. 12, and then travel to Northome-Kelliher to play the Mustangs on Friday, Dec. 13.

Downie was the high scorer for the Tigers with 12 points, and Megan Felthous had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

“This is definitely a year of change,” Downie said of the season. “We’re figuring out what kind of team we are, and what roles we are playing as individuals.

“I think we’ve surprised ourselves so far, and I hope we can keep that up.”

PR-B was also outshot from the free-throw line as they shot 36 percent compared to Verndale’s 58 percent. But it was turnovers that really hurt the Tigers as they had 30 turnovers to the Pirates’ 16.

Besides total points, other statistics for PR-B include: Ashley Anderson with two rebounds, and two steals; Allison Anderson, one rebound, one assist and one steal; Megan Porta three rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block; Downie two rebounds, one assist and one steal; Felthous 13 rebounds, four assists and two steals; and Journee Howard nine rebounds and two steals.

In PR-B’s season opener on Tuesday, Dec. 3, Megan Felthous scrored 18 points and had seven steals in a non-conference win over the Pillager Huskies.

“After losing six seniors last year, two of which had been starting since eighth grade, I believe that we have still continued to measure up to our coach’s high expectations,” said senior Journee Howard. “We start off with a win, which is always a huge confidence booster. I think we’re going to continue to work hard and improve.”

Howard had a double-double as she scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. The Tigers went 10-17 from the free throw line (59 percent) while the Huskies only shot 6-16 (38 percent) .
