The Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew junior varsity wrestling team opened the season with two individual tournaments.
At Aitkin, Tim Ryan lost his first match, but came back to win with pins in 4:19 and 2:44. Colton Anderson lost his first match 11-6, but came back with pins at 1:58 and 1:39. Jace Leabo had pins in 3:07 and 1:47. Austin Philipson won his match with a pin at 1:38.
Luke Sescher won his first two matches by scores of 11-4 and 17-3. He had to wrestle a teammate for third match, and lost by technical fall to Isaac Manthei, who had won his first two matches with pins at 1:02 and 1:58.
Ryan Visser won with falls in 1:14 and 2:13, but lost his third contest. Harley Large won one with a pin at 2:58. John Urseth won his match with a pin in 12 seconds. Nikoa Cooper lost all three, but one match 17-10. Lance Squires won with pins in 2:21 and 4:34. Jonah Leluica won by fall in 31 seconds, but then lost two close matches.
Joe Harrison won 7-0, then had a pin in 40 seconds and in 2:43. Chris Hamon lost his first match, then came back with a pin at 5:31 and an 11-2 victory. Cody Booth registered pins in 43 seconds and at 1:53. Justin Neumann won by fall in 42, 43 and 19 seconds. Devyn Richards won with a pin at 1:06 while Sam Pelky won one with a pin at 1:50. Austin McAllister earned a 7-5 decision and won by fall at 4:56.
JV wrestles at Aitkin
Only wrestlers in graders 7-9 competed at Aitkin. First-place winners were: Isaac Manthei, Devyn Richards and Justin Neuman. Placing second were John Urseth and Jace Leabo. Finishing third were Colton Anderson, Cody Booth, David Schroeder, Peter Koering, Luke Sechser and Tim Ryan. Fourth-place finishers were Eli O’Dell and Ryan Visser.
Jake Ryan won his first match of his career with a 9-8 victory. Tim Ryan lost his first match then came back with a pin. Colton Anderson won by fall, but lost his next match and then rallied with two pins.
Addison Harrington won one with a first-period takedown and a pin. Jace Leabo won with a takedown going into a pin. Luke Sescher lost his first match, but won with two pins. Isaac Manthei had a pin and 10-1 and 12-1 decision, to improve to 6-0 on the season.
John Urseth won one with a first-period pin. Cody Booth lost his first match, but came back winning with two pins. David Schroeder registered two pins. Justin Neumann has a 5-0 season record after posting two pins. Devyn Richards won all three matches with pins. Peter Koering lost his first match 6-5, then came back with two pins and a 6-0 win. Eli O’Dell registered a pin.
“The kids proved they were willing to leave it on the mat,” said Road Crew head coach Travis Hoffarth. “They were very competitive.”
