Patriots improve to 2-0
The Pequot Lakes Patriots boys’ basketball team improved to 2-0 overall with a dominating 58-37 road victory over the Deer River Warriors in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
The Patriots assumed a 29-22 halftime lead behind 10 first-half points by Connor Davich. Four Pequot Lakes players finished in double-digit scoring as the Patriots handed Deer River its second straight loss.
“I thought the kids came out and played much better than our opening-game effort against Aitkin,” said Pequot Lakes coach Ben Starns. “The guys made adjustments on offense, and it was nice to see balance scoring.”The guys got into it on defense, and we outscored them 11-0 in the first eight minutes of the second half for a 40-22 lead.”
Davich, Jack Kreitz and John Craig each finished with 11 points while C.J. Borleis also reached double figures with 10 points for the Patriots. Aaron Drotts led the hosts with 15 points.
Deer River grabbed a brief 11-7 lead early in the game, but Pequot Lakes answered with nine straight points for an insurmountable 16-11 lead with 8:33 left in the half. Craig and Kreitz each had 3-point baskets while Kreitz added three points on a basket and free throw.
After a basket by Tyler Tappe, Davich scored eight straight points to expand the lead. The half ended when Larson passed to Travis Jacobson for a layup to make it 29-22.
Craig and Kreitz both hit 3-point shots to open the second half, Borleis drove for three baskets and Craig had a reverse layup for a 44-25 lead in the first 10 minutes.
After the Warriors cut the deficit to 48-37 with 4:20 left in the game, but that would be the final points for Deer River. The visitors scored the final 10 points on baskets by Borleis and Brett Peterson while going six for six from the free-throw line.
Pequot Lakes, which made 13 of 18 from the line, had 26 points from the bench players.
Pequot Lakes is scheduled to host Wadena-Deer Creek in a Mid-State Conference matchup at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6.
The Pequot Lakes junior varsity team fell to Deer River 48-32 after trailing 24-15 at the half. Gage Westlund led the Patriots with seven points, Cody Huss and Josh Buell each had six, Lucas Mumm five, Hunter Goerges three, Austin Anderson and Levi Palmer each had two, and Andy Voges added a free throw.
The Pequot Lakes freshmen won 27-10 after trailing 11-4 at intermission. Casey Welch had 12 points and Hunter Clement added five to lead the Patriots.
“We were down 4-1 after almost 10 minutes,” said freshman coach Bret Sergent. “It was an ugly first half, but we did get things going in the second half to win.”
“We came out flat, and they broke us down for some easy baskets,” said junior varsity coach Alex Kunesh.
