Ryan places 138th at state meet
Pequot Lakes’ junior Caitie Ryan placed 138th overall in 17 minutes even in her first appearance in the Class A girls’ state cross country meet on Saturday, Nov. 2, at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
“One of Caitie’s goals was to get into the sixteens, and she was right there,” Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale said of the 16-minute mark for the race. “It’s almost overwhelming when you get to state and there are so many kids. But Caitie did great for her first time.”
Dale said Ryan was hoping to pace her start to the four kilometer race.
“She didn’t want to start out too fast,” he said. “Caitie really wanted to get her feet wet since it was her first (state meet). She pretty much stayed where she started the race. Caitie didn’t climb up (the field) but she also didn’t lose ground.
“Caitie now knows what to expect at state. She can build on the experience next year.”
Dale added that Ryan had family and teammates watching her at state.
“Five of our top seven girls were at state,” he said. “Hopefully, that experience will motivate all of them next year.”
Senior Emi Trost of Cannon Falls was the individual champion in 14:40.3. A total of 174 runners participated.
